The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) comes no far from one of the best universities in the country.

It was established in the year 1952, and it is one of the largest universities in the country to date. The then famous King of the Ashanti Kingdom Nana Agyeman Prempeh had it among his intentions to establish a university.

But Nana Agyeman Prempeh was unable to achieve this due to an encounter between the Ashantis and the British.

However, his successor being his younger brother Nana Agyeman Prempeh II, kept on with the fight for the establishment of the university in 1949 when its construction commenced.

KNUST was initially suggested to be called Kumasi College of Technology. Finally, on January 22nd, 1952, the university was officially opened and offered admission to its first students being the students of the engineering faculty.

Later on, in 1952, the parliament of Ghana approved the KNUST premise in Kumasi. The then Kumasi college of technology was first affiliated to the University of London in 1961.

During that year, the Kumasi College of Technology was transformed to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The Kwame Nkurumah University of Science and Technology has its motto as “Nyansapo Wosane No Badwenma” in the Ashanti Twi dialect.

The motto means the “knot of wisdom is untied only by the wise “(in English).

As of the year 2016, KNUST had a population of over 42,590. The main university campus is situated in the regional capital of the Ashanti region Kumasi.
