However, you have made an effort to come to the right place to understand how much is KPLC token and how the price was arrived at by Kenya power.

In a nutshell, there is a lot of consideration that KPLC takes note of when determining the price of a token, and the price is not static.

Among these considerations are traffic and other surcharges.

How much do KPLC tokens cost?

The first determination of how much KPLC tokens cost is your traffic. KPLC offers four tariffs, and each tariff comes with different charges per token.

Domestic lifeline (DL) or consumer 1

This tariff is meant for customers who use between 0 and 100 units each month. If you fall into this category, you will be charged KSHs 10.00 per kWh. Your token price will be at KSHs 15.4 on average.

Domestic ordinary (DO)

If your monthly unit consumption exceeds 100, you’ll be in this bracket, and the token price for this rate is KSHs 15.8 per kWh. As a result, the average token price will be at KSHs 21.95.

Small commercial 1

Small enterprises with monthly use of 0-100 units are eligible for the rate. You will be charged KSHs 10.00 per unit or token in this category. And the average token cost will be at KSHs 15.4.

Small commercial 2

This tariff is tailored for businesses that use between 101 and 15000 units per month, and the cost per unit is KSHs 15.60. The token cost will be at KSHs 21.95 on average.

If you don’t fit into one of the categories above, you’re a post-paid customer or a business that uses more than 415 volts. Also, your billing is distinct.

Other surges which determine the cost of tokens

You must pay several fees while purchasing tokens from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC). These charges are:

Fuel cost charge

This money will be used to generate electricity from thermal power plants. It fluctuates every month depending on the amount of thermal generated and the cost of fuel.

Forex adjustment

How Kenya shilling is performing in the forex also affects the cost of KPLC tokens. The charge on the exchange rate leads to a change in the charges of the tokens.

Inflation adjustment

Inflation on the cost of supply varies depending on domestic and foreign inflation. Starting on January 1st, KPLC will review it every six months.

WARMA Levy

This is now fixed at 0.05 cents per kilowatt-hour for hydro-power generation of 1 megawatt and above by the Water Resource Management Authority (WARMA). The WARMA charge is paired with the ERC levy for prepaid consumer’s token receipts.

Levy imposed by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

EPRA gets 3 cents per kilowatt-hour and is used to finance the Energy Regulatory Commission’s operating expenses.

Rural Electrification Authority (REA) levy

This is now set at 5% of the unit cost and is given to the rural electrification authority to conduct rural electrification projects.

VAT (Value Added Tax)

The tax is currently fixed at 16 percent, and is levied on consumption, gasoline costs, and currency adjustments.

After taking these surges and the traffic into consideration, then calculates how much the KPLC token cost. The cost will differ according to your tariff.
